A Complete Guide to Weddings at Villa Terrace in Milwaukee

Villa Terrace wedding in Milwaukee

Villa Terrace is the most gorgeous and recognizable wedding venue in Milwaukee. The historic villa sits on a bluff above Lake Michigan, surrounded by terraced gardens that step down toward the water.

It’s a venue that already feels complete the moment you arrive. The courtyard, the lake views, the gardens below the villa. Every part of the property a different scene ready for you to walk into on your wedding day.

I’ve photographed more than 30 weddings at Villa Terrace since 2009, including nine weddings there in 2024 alone! After spending so many wedding days here, I’ve come to understand how the venue works beyond just the scenery. The details like where ceremonies feel most natural, where couples love taking portraits, and how the spaces transition throughout the day.

If you’re planning a Villa Terrace wedding in Milwaukee, this guide walks through the ceremony locations, portrait spots, and a few things couples often want to know ahead of time.

Ceremony Locations at Villa Terrace

Villa Terrace offers two primary ceremony locations: the terrace overlooking Lake Michigan and the garden below the villa.

Both are breathtakingly beautiful, but also create very different experiences. Let’s talk about each one.

The Terrace Ceremony

The terrace ceremony takes place directly outside the villa with Lake Michigan behind the couple.

Because the ceremony is framed by the building and the lake, the setting feels both open and intimate. One practical thing couples should know is that when the ceremony faces the lake, the aisle is fairly short. Some couples choose to orient the ceremony north or south instead, which allows for a longer walk down the aisle. The terrace works especially well for couples who want the lake to be part of the ceremony backdrop.

You can see an example of a terrace ceremony in Maddie and Sammy’s wedding here.

The Garden Ceremony

Garden ceremonies take place in the Smith Family Garden, the Renaissance-style garden located below the villa along the bluff.

From the ceremony lawn you look back toward the villa, with the long staircase and water feature rising up the hill behind you. It creates a dramatic perspective that photographs beautifully.

One of the things I love about garden ceremonies here is that they rarely need much decor. The architecture and landscaping already create the setting. Between the hedges, the stone paths, and the villa above the garden, the space already feels finished.

There’s also something about this part of the property that feels distinctly Mediterranean. With the white stucco villa, terracotta roof tiles, and formal garden design, it’s easy to forget you’re still in Milwaukee.

What Happens If It Rains?

Villa Terrace does have a rain plan. If weather doesn’t cooperate, ceremonies move inside to the Great Hall of the villa.

One thing that makes this venue unique is that rain rarely feels like a worst-case scenario here. Between the covered courtyard, the interior museum spaces, and the gardens outside, there are many places to photograph throughout the day.

In fact, it’s probably one of the best venues in Milwaukee for a rainy wedding day. The architecture and gardens still create beautiful backdrops, so the day can continue without feeling limited by the weather.

Getting Ready at Villa Terrace

Villa Terrace has a beautiful getting ready room that works well for a smaller group.

Many brides step into their dresses in what I’ve always called the “wallpaper room.” It’s a smaller antique-filled room upstairs with vintage furniture and floral textured walls that photograph beautifully.

Because Villa Terrace is a museum, it’s helpful to remember that artwork and installations remain in place throughout the building.

Photo Locations Around Villa Terrace

One of the reasons Villa Terrace works so well for weddings is that there are so many stunning portrait locations around the venue. No need to leave the property to find an amazing variety.

The Courtyard

The courtyard is centered around a statue of Mercury, which serves as the focal point of the space. Guests often gather here during cocktail hour, moving between the arches and the open courtyard. The architecture creates natural framing for portraits and provides some shade during the afternoon.

The Boschetto

Another favorite portrait location is the Boschetto, a garden arch made of dense greenery that forms a tunnel of foliage. It creates a quieter corner of the property where couples can step away for portraits surrounded by greenery.

The Garden Water Feature

Near the base of the garden staircase is a small water feature where water flows down the center of the stone stairs and into a circular pond below. From this spot you can look up toward the staircase and the villa above it, which makes it one of the most recognizable views on the property.

The Balcony

The second-floor balcony overlooking the courtyard is another great space at Villa Terrace. I’ve seen it used in a couple different ways to complement the day’s activities. My couples often use it for first looks or private vows. I’ve also photographed a wedding where the couple shared vows on the balcony while guests gathered below in the courtyard. It’s occasionally used for toasts as cocktail hour transitions into dinner. No matter how it’s used, it’s a unique feature that I always recommend my couples take advantage of.

Cocktail Hour in the Courtyard

I love the Mercury Courtyard for cocktail hour, since it keeps guests moving and engaged without feeling crowded in the romantic space. Galerie magazine named the Mercury Courtyard one of the eight most beautiful museum courtyards in the nation, and it’s easy to see why. Guests can mingle and gather around the central fountain, drift through the garden paths, or step under the arches for shade. I also love that it has the beautiful balconies above to add another element to the celebration. Something about the architecture and the fountains makes it feel more like a small piazza in Italy than a typical cocktail hour.

Reception on the Terrace

Most couples host dinner on the terrace overlooking Lake Michigan. Long tables, string lights overhead, and the villa behind you create a relaxed and elegant setting as the evening begins. As the light fades, the terrace takes on a completely different atmosphere under the string lights. It’s absolutely stunning. From there, dancing typically moves inside to the Great Hall.

Is Villa Terrace the Right Milwaukee Wedding Venue for You?

Villa Terrace feels different from most wedding venues in Milwaukee.

The villa itself was designed in a Mediterranean style, with white stucco walls, terracotta roof tiles, and an open courtyard framed by arches. The gardens extend down the bluff toward Lake Michigan, with the Boschetto garden arch and the Smith Family Garden creating a completely different environment below the villa.

Because of this, the venue doesn’t need much added decor. The architecture, gardens, and lake views already provide the atmosphere, and it’s gorgeous.

Villa Terrace also works best for couples who appreciate a more intimate celebration. The guest count is limited to 120 and receptions conclude at 10:30 PM, which tends to keep the evening relaxed and focused rather than sprawling.

For couples who love historic architecture, gardens, and a venue that feels a little removed from the city around it, Villa Terrace is easily one of the most memorable places to get married in Milwaukee.

As a Milwaukee wedding photographer who often documents weddings at Villa Terrace, I can confidently say this is my favorite wedding venue in the city.

Villa Terrace Wedding FAQ

How many guests can Villa Terrace accommodate?

Villa Terrace weddings are typically capped at 120 guests, which keeps celebrations more intimate and allows the property to feel comfortable throughout the evening.

Where do ceremonies take place at Villa Terrace?

Ceremonies usually take place either on the lakefront terrace outside the villa or in the Smith Family Garden below the property. Both locations offer very different perspectives of the villa and gardens.

What happens if it rains on a Villa Terrace wedding day?

If rain moves in, ceremonies are held inside the Great Hall of the villa. There are also several covered areas and interior spaces available for portraits, which makes Villa Terrace one of the more flexible venues in Milwaukee when weather changes.

Can you take wedding photos throughout the gardens?

Yes. Couples typically take portraits in the courtyard, the Boschetto garden arch, the Smith Family Garden, and near the staircase water feature. Because the property is compact, it’s easy to move between these locations during the day.

What time do Villa Terrace weddings end?

Receptions typically conclude around 10:30 PM due to venue guidelines.

Planning a Villa Terrace Wedding?

If you’re planning a Villa Terrace wedding in Milwaukee and looking for a photographer familiar with the venue, I’d love to hear about your plans.
